All district employees must go through a pre hire screening which includes an interview, substance abuse testing, criminal record check, physical examination and a review of their driving record.
School Bus Driver Requirements and Training:
All school bus drivers are required to obtain a California School Bus Certificate. The driver must complete 20 hours of classroom training. All instruction must be given by a State Certified Instructor. Drivers are required to have a physical examination, with a drug and alcohol screen (DL51) in addition to district Pre Hire screening. Driver must obtain a California Commercial Drivers License with passenger endorsement. Driver is interviewed by CHP, fingerprinted, background check, and must present a DMV printout of the last 10 years. Driver must pass a written test on rules and regulations and first aid before starting the Behind the Wheel Training. The Behind the Wheel training is a minimum of 20 hours with a State Certified Behind the Wheel trainer. Once the behind the wheel is complete, the driver must pass a drive test at CHP.
By law, all school bus drivers must have a minimum of 10 hours training related to driving a school bus each 12-month period. Also all school bus drivers must pass a physical examination every two years and are randomly drug and alcohol tested. All employees of Oroville Union High School District Transportation Department are required to attend monthly meetings, and trainings in addition to their 10 hours of state required training.
